Self Defense
Sprays
There are three types of self defense sprays available for sale to civilian consumers. CN (Chloroacetophenone) commonly known as
Mace, CS (Orthochlorobenzylidenemalononitrile)
commonly known as Tear Gas, and OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) also known as pepper spray. CN and CS cause tearing and irritation.
They do not have any effect on those who are enraged or are under the influence of
narcotics, or alcohol. OC is the natural extract of hot pepper and causes closing of the
eyes and coughing. There are a variety of OC sprays available with various degrees of
potency and safety. Consumers should be warned that the majority of defense sprays contain hazardous chemicals, which
are either highly toxic or cancer causing to the user. Contrary to the claims of
marketers, civilian brands of sprays are not used by professional law enforcement
agencies. The majority of self defense sprays are made as sideline quick sale items by
companies with no experience in developing legitimate weaponry for self protection.
