Use of Force AR 190-14, use of Oleoresin Capsicum pepper spray (OC)

Use of OC complies with the REF A, Paragraph 301.B. As an option for substituting non-lethal device for firearms.

Pepper Spray provides the commander with additional flexibility in situations requiring force and may be used by trained personnel in daily law enforcement operations. This weapon is to be used as a stand-off, personal defensive weapon, prior to using the MP CLUB or other more lethal weapons.

Pepper Spray (OC) is a Riot Control Agent (RCA).

Pepper Spray is preferred over other type of Spray because it is composed of natural elements, is environmentally safe, biodegradable, and produces a rapid physiological reaction in low concentrations. The U.S. Army Medical Command has concurred that with proper training and appropriate use, OC has a high level of effectiveness and safety.

OC pepper spray is available at different concentrations. The recommended concentration for use by Military Police is 5 to 6%. Pepper spray at the 5% concentration is available through the supply system using NSN 1365-NC-E50-3190 (Z-305 Standard Duty CAP-STUN unit and its Leather Holster).
