Illegal New Jersey's only civilian exemption for a chemical self-defense device is written narrowly for a pocket-sized device dispensing no more than 3/4 ounce, vaporized in the air. A compressed-gas launcher firing a discrete OC projectile does not fit this exemption. Possession outside the exemption falls under New Jersey's general fourth-degree prohibited-weapon offense.
