As students head back to school this August, safety is just as important as backpacks and textbooks. Whether walking to class, navigating a college campus, or riding public transit, being prepared gives both students and parents peace of mind.

Elementary & Middle School Students:

Younger students may not carry self-defense tools, but they can benefit from education around awareness and knowing how to get help. Consider personal alarms with loud sirens they can use in an emergency. Walking with friends and sticking to familiar routes also increases safety. Also consider tracking devices or a smart watch that allows phone calls to ensure you are always able to get in touch with your children without providing them with a phone when they are still very young.

High School Students:

High schoolers are often more independent and may walk or drive themselves to school. Avoid walking while distracted by your phone. Stay alert, especially when passing through parking lots, alleys, or less-populated areas. Keep your head up and make eye contact with people around you. Be sure to always trust your gut. If someone or something feels off—trust your instincts. Move away from uncomfortable situations, speak up to a trusted adult, or notify school security or staff.

College Students:

College campuses present a unique set of safety challenges, especially for students attending evening classes or walking long distances. Tools like Vexor® pepper sprays give quick, accessible protection in unfamiliar areas. As stated above, always trust your gut. If someone or something feels off, keep your distance. If you see something, ALWAYS say something. Your voice can sometimes be your biggest self-defense tool.

Extra Tips for Every Age:

  • Use well-lit and populated paths.
  • Stay off your phone while you are walking.
  • Always tell someone where you're going.
  • Trust your instincts and speak up if something feels off.

Conclusion:

Safety is an essential school supply. Help your students feel confident and prepared by equipping them with the tools and awareness they need to protect themselves.
